How do I play the online trombone?

In 3D view, choose Play to tap, strum, or glide across a playing surface. Hold keys or wind surfaces to sustain a note. Choose Rotate to inspect the model; scroll or pinch to zoom. Use the labeled note controls or computer keys for chords and the full range. Classic view provides the original illustrated playing surface. Use a labeled note control or keyboard shortcut to choose a pitch. Tap for a short accent or hold for a longer tone. The illustrated slide responds visually; use the note controls to play.

What sounds does the virtual trombone use?

Trombone samples from FluidR3 GM provide the low brass voice. Pitches are discrete notes: moving the illustration does not produce a continuous slide, glissando, or a physical trombone position.

Cross an octave with discrete brass notes

Move from a low C through G to the C above. This exercise makes the available register audible without implying a continuous slide.

Starting tempo: 60 BPM. Use Keep the beat for a steady pulse.

  2. 2G2 (G)
  3. 3C3 (K)
  4. 4G2 (G)

  1. Find the low and high C

Locate C2, G2 and C3. Their shortcuts are A, G and K. Headphones or speakers may reveal the low C more clearly than a phone speaker.

  2. Make the octave trip

At 60 BPM, play A-G-K-G on four beats. Release between the notes; the illustration does not bend one pitch continuously into another.

  3. Hold the return

Play A on beat 5 and hold through beat 6. Release for the last two beats before repeating.

Try next: Replace G2 with E2 using D in both places. Compare the smaller intermediate step while keeping the octave endpoints.

A few useful notes about the trombone

Can I make a continuous trombone slide?

This virtual trombone plays discrete sampled notes. The illustration provides visual feedback, but it does not bend a pitch continuously or teach the seven acoustic slide positions.

How do I hear the low trombone notes clearly?

The note controls cover C2 to E3. Headphones or speakers can make that low register easier to hear than a small phone speaker. Start at a comfortable volume, then alternate short notes with held tones.
