Guide updated

Play a free four-string virtual bass guitar with fingerstyle sounds. Explore low notes using your mouse, touch screen, or computer keyboard.

Build a bass line with four open strings in E–A–D–G tuning. Start with a few low notes, leave space between them, and hear how a rhythm takes shape.

How do I play the online bass?

In 3D view, choose Play to tap, strum, or glide across a playing surface. Hold keys or wind surfaces to sustain a note. Choose Rotate to inspect the model; scroll or pinch to zoom. Use the labeled note controls or computer keys for chords and the full range. Classic view provides the original illustrated playing surface. Touch the 3D neck to choose among 22 fret positions, or pluck over the body for an open note. Play close-up enlarges the fingerboard. Classic view and the labeled note buttons keep their compact range.

What sounds does the virtual bass use?

Fingerstyle electric bass samples provide a rounded attack and a deep, short decay.

Give a bass line room to breathe

Build a low accompaniment from three open strings. Leaving a beat without a new pluck makes the length and weight of each note easier to hear.

Starting tempo: 60 BPM. Use Keep the beat for a steady pulse.

  1. 1E1
  2. 2No new pluck
  3. 3E1
  4. 4A1
  5. 5E1
  6. 6No new pluck
  7. 7D2
  8. 8No new pluck
  1. Find the low strings

Open Individual open strings and locate E1, A1 and D2. Use these named buttons; the main A keyboard shortcut plays C2, not the open E1 string.

  2. Follow the eight beats

Start Keep the beat at 60 BPM with four beats per bar. Tap each named open string on its beat. Let the note decay during a beat marked No new pluck.

  3. Repeat without speeding up

Repeat the pattern three times. Pay attention to the adjacent E1 and A1 plucks on beats 3 and 4, where it is easy to rush the change.

Try next: Replace D2 on beat 7 with G2 from Individual open strings. Compare the larger upward move while keeping every other beat unchanged.

How do I record the bass in Resonant?

  1. Choose your playing controls

Choose Play in 3D view or switch to Classic. Tap a playing surface, use the labeled note controls, or press a computer-key shortcut to enable sound.

  2. Record your idea

Press Record above the instrument, then play your phrase. This records studio audio without using your microphone. Each take can last up to five minutes.

  3. Listen and keep a copy

Press Stop, open Recordings, and listen to the take. Choose Download WAV or Original audio to keep a file. Saved takes stay on this device; clearing browser storage removes them.

A few useful notes about the bass

How do I start a bass line?

Open Individual open strings and alternate E1 and A1. Leave a gap between plucks, then use Keep the beat to practise a steady pulse.

Can I play bass melodies beyond the open strings?

Yes. Touch the 22-fret neck in 3D to choose fretted notes, or pluck over the body for the open E–A–D–G tuning. Classic view and the labeled note controls retain their compact playing range.
