Guide updated

Play a free virtual oboe with a distinctive sampled double-reed voice. Hold notes and explore a C4–E5 melody scale with keyboard or touch controls.

Give a quiet phrase its own character. Ten diatonic notes from C4 to E5 let you explore the oboe’s focused reed color, one short idea at a time.

How do I play the online oboe?

In 3D view, choose Play to tap, strum, or glide across a playing surface. Hold keys or wind surfaces to sustain a note. Choose Rotate to inspect the model; scroll or pinch to zoom. Use the labeled note controls or computer keys for chords and the full range. Classic view provides the original illustrated playing surface. Press a labeled note control, hold to sustain, and release before the next phrase. Try repeating a few notes with different lengths, then use Record to keep the version you like.

What sounds does the virtual oboe use?

Oboe samples from FluidR3 GM supply the double-reed sound and sustain. Controls select concert pitches directly; reed pressure, breath control, and acoustic oboe fingering are not simulated.

Answer short notes with a held tone

Use the same small pitch set in two different rhythmic shapes. The oboe’s sustained sample makes the longer answer easy to compare with the opening.

Starting tempo: 60 BPM. Use Keep the beat for a steady pulse.

  1. 1C4 (A)
  2. 2E4 (D)
  3. 3D4 (S)
  4. 4Release and rest
  5. 5C4 (A)
  6. 6Keep holding C4
  7. 7D4 (S)
  8. 8Release and rest
  1. Locate the three controls

Use A for C4, S for D4 and D for E4, or tap their labeled note controls. Start the metronome at 60 BPM.

  2. Play the short opening

Play C4-E4-D4 on beats 1 to 3. Release between notes and leave the fourth beat empty.

  3. Lengthen the answer

Press C4 on beat 5 and keep it held through beat 6. Release before D4 on beat 7, then leave the last beat empty.

Try next: Use E4 instead of D4 at the end of each half. Compare the changed ending while preserving the short-versus-held contrast.

How do I record the oboe in Resonant?

A few useful notes about the oboe

What makes the oboe sound different from the clarinet?

The oboe uses a separate sample bank with the focused character of a double-reed instrument. Compare the same short phrase on Oboe and Clarinet to explore their different reed colors.

Can I change oboe breath pressure or fingerings?

No. The ten labeled note controls select pitches from C4 to E5 directly. Hold to sustain and release to fade; acoustic breath, reed pressure, and finger combinations are not modeled.
